Joggers' initiative to attract new recruits
A new scheme has been set up by Worcester Joggers. The Novice Joggers program is aimed at  attracting  people who have little or no experience of running and are anxious about joining a group of runners because they feel that they may not  be able to run very far at first.
The idea is to get a group of people, new to running, together and encourage them into a training routine. It is hoped  the newcomers will gradualy build up thir ability until they can join  the main group of joggers.  New joggers will benefit from the fitness and weight control advantages that regular, gentle exercise offers. A male and female member of the Worcester Joggers will be on hand at each one of these sessions.
The free programme which is open to all ages will start on Monday September 4, and will contine for eight weeks.
Anyone interested should meet at 6.45pm, outside the Perdiswell Leisure Centre.
Members of Worcester Joggers say the club is quite a sociable, often meeting for a drink and occasionally a meal or barbeque. For more information contact Nigel Stinton on 01905 453414.

Spurred on by his own experience
A Worcestershire County Council chief has raised more than £700 to aid young carers after completing a gruelling marathon in three hours 45 minutes. Peter Gilbert, Director of Social Services, raised the funds during the Statford-upon-Avon Shakespeare race, last Sunday. The money will go to the Worcestershire Young Carers project, which provides support and activities for the 700 young carers across the county. The youngsters whose average age is 12, can experience academic difficulties through missing school and suffer physical health problems through their work. Fifty percent of carers come from single parent families and miss out on making friends as they are not able to participate in normal childhood activites.
"I wanted to support the project as I had to care for my own parents," said Mr Gilbert. "Although my parents health didn't fail until I was in my 20's, I remember how traumatic I found it when the roles were reversed.  I am very pleased to support the Worcestershire young carers project."
He thanked the young carers, colleagues and friends for all their help as well as the Worcester Joggers and the Worcester Athletics Club for all the Support. "I've never run a full marathon before and it was a warm day," he said. "But I ran it in less time than I expected which I was pleased with and it was great to have supporters cheering me during the race. The second half was more gruelling and I did slow up a bit, but I am pleased with my time and delighted with the amount of money being pledged to the cause. It really was a great event."
